He watched her with a steady gaze beneath the glow of the patio lights. "Thank you for caring about me and my son. You're the only one who has, except for my parents. People act like I have a contagiousdisease because I'm a widower."
A look of disbelief washed over Violet's face. He must be mistaken.
How could no one notice this man? Surely other women had paid attention to him. He probably just didn't realize it.
The wind blew Violet's hair across her face, and she glanced up at the cloudy sky. "It looks like it's going to rain soon."
Tom reached across and gently swept her hair aside. Instead of letting go, his fingers caressed a silky strand. "I'm glad you're here. I'm glad I met you."
Violet was so taken aback by his gesture that the words escaped her.
Her body froze, and her heart began to beat faster.
Gazing into her eyes, he slowly leaned forward and brought his perfect lips close to hers.
She shut her eyes and waited for a second but pulled away. "I'm sorry."
"No, I'm sorry," he said. "I just thought…"
"You were right. I wanted you to kiss me."
"Then, why did you pull away?"
"Because." She rose to her feet. "All of this is happening so fast.  I feel like I just met you.
