Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week I'm reading:

Lucky In Love - Jill Shalvis

“No Stephen,” she said. “I had to give him up. Last month’s reread of The Shining wrecked me.”
Amy nodded. “Emergency Dispatch tired of taking your ‘there’s a shadow outside my window’ calls?”
“Hey, that was one time.” Giving up squeezing the water out of her hair, Mallory ignored Amy’s knowing snicker. “And for your information, there really was a man outside my window.”
“Yeah. Seventy-year-old Mr. Wykowski, who’d gotten turned around on his walk around the block.”

“Are you coming onto me?”
“Well, technically, you’re on top of me,” she pointed out. “So I think that means that you’re coming onto me.”
With a groan, he pressed his forehead to hers and swore beneath his breath, and not the good kind of swear either. And though she should have seen this coming, she hadn’t.

This week I'm reading:

City of Lost Souls - Cassandra Clare

"I’ve noticed the Fair Folk often say ‘perhaps’ when there is a truth they want to hide,” Clary said. “It keeps you from having to give a straight answer.”
“Perhaps so,” said the Queen with an amused smile.
“‘Mayhap’ is a good word too,” Alec suggested.
“Also ‘perchance,’” Izzy said.
“I see nothing wrong with ‘maybe,’” said Simon. “A little modern, but the gist of the idea comes across.”

“I love Jace Lightwood,” she said. “I don’t know who you are.”
His face changed, but before he could speak, a scream shattered the silence. A scream, and the sound of breaking glass"

This week I'm reading:

Born Wicked - Jessica Spotswood

"We were the best of friends right up until the day he left. This man in front of me now is a stranger.
And I’m not the carefree Cate he left behind. Seeing him again—it makes me miss that girl. She didn’t realize how much she had to lose. She laughed more and worried a great deal less."

This week I'm reading:

Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler

"Sometimes life rocks so hard your heart wants to explode just because the sun came up and you got to feel it on your face for one more day. Sometimes you get the bitter end instead."

I scrape my thumbnail over the red streak—no change. “Seriously. You should see what I’m wearing.”
“Mmmm,” he says, his voice going low and smoky. “What are you wearing?”
I know he’s trying to be all cheesy porn star, but the way he’s breathing into the phone sends a squiggly shiver down my back.
“Um … it’s … I’m … the Hurley’s dress … thing.”
“Kidding, Avery.”

This week I'm reading:

Try Not To Breathe - Jennifer Hubbard

"Her eyes flicked back to my face. I felt the question sitting on her tongue. If I tapped her on the back, it would probably pop right out. I ran my fingers over the smooth top of the bar and met her stare, daring her to ask me. And I wasn’t sure why I was daring her, except that the way she’d wormed herself into my house made me curious about how far she would go. From what I’d seen, if anyone had the guts to ask me to my face, this girl would."

“I took a step back. If he was going to sit here all morning, I could hit the trails instead. I was hungry to be alone. When I was around other people, I always expected the next thing out of their mouths to cut me."

This week I'm reading:

The Staristical Probability of Love at First Sight - Jennifer E. Smith

“I have a fear of mayo, so I’ve actually gotten pretty good at this over the years.”
“You have a fear of mayo?”
She nods again. “It’s in my top three or four.”
“What are the others?” he asks with a grin. “I mean, what could possibly be worse
than mayonnaise?”
“Dentists,” she offers. “Spiders. Ovens.”

“That’s what I’m studying, actually,” he says with a grin. “This summer.”
“What?”
“Split personality disorder in eighteenyear-old males.”
“Of course,” she says. “The one thing more frightening than mayo.”

This week I'm reading:

Game for Nothing - Bella Andre

"She itched to smack the lazy grin off his perfect face even as he searched his eyes for any sign of remorse. Nothing, just as she'd figured."

"Are you kidding?" She said, backing away in horror. "I'm not going to follow you down there."
He laughed. "What do you think I'm going to do? Cut you up and store you in my freezer?"
"Of course not. But..."

This week I'm reading:

Illuminated - Erica Orloff

“And you’re not excited the slightest bit about sleuthing with August.”
A cab pulled over to pick us up. I had August’s card in my hand. I glanced over at Uncle Harry. “Well, if I have to sleuth
this summer and play Nancy Drew . . . there’s nothing like a hot guy to make it even more interesting.”

"And there, alone, I cried. At first, it was a weird aimless crying. I cried for Miriam, for August, for Professor Sokolov, for Astrolabe and Heloise and Abelard. And then, finally, I felt the hard tears start, and I cried for me. For the motherless little girl and the woman in the picture in my room whom I never had the chance to know."

This week I'm reading:

Remembrance - Michelle Madow

"He must have figured that I wasn’t going to try pulling away again, because he raised his hand to my shoulder and trailed his thumb down to my elbow, reaching my wrist and intertwining his fingers with mine. The palms of our hands connected, and I decided to enjoy the time we could be together, knowing that everything would return to the way it had been come Monday morning."

This week I'm reading:

The Vincent Boys - Abbi Glines

"He was the only family I truly loved. When he excelled I silently cheered him on. He’d stood by me through a rough childhood begging his parents to let me stay over nights when I was too scared to go back to a dark empty trailer. He’d always had everything I didn’t have. The perfect parents, home, life but none of that had mattered because I had Ashton. Sure, we all three were friends but Ash had been mine. She’d been my partner in crime, the one person I told all my dreams and fears to, my soul mate. Then just like everything else in Sawyer’s perfect life he got my girl. The only thing I’d thought I could call mine had become his."

"There were a million things I wanted to say. But saying any of them would be a bad move. Keeping Nicole’s mouth shut was more important.
“She’s Sawyer’s girl.”

This week I'm reading:

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer - Michelle Hodkin

“I’m not your type,” I managed to say.
Noah then took a step toward me, and a deviant smile teased the corner of his mouth. Damn. “I don’t
have a type.”
“That’s even worse,” I said, and I swear I tried to sound mean when I said it. “You’re as indiscriminate as
they say.”
But I wanted him closer.
“I’ve been slandered.” His voice was barely above a whisper. He took another step, so close that I felt the
warm aura of his chest. He looked down at me, all sincere and open and with that chaos hair in his eyes and
I wanted and didn’t want and I had to say something.
“I doubt it” was the best I could do. His face was inches from mine. I was going to kiss him, and I was
going to regret it.
But at that moment, I couldn’t bring myself to care."

"You are aware that my math skills are even more lacking than my social skills?”
“Impossible.” Jamie’s mouth spread into a mocking grin.
“Thanks. Seriously, you must have better things to do with your life than waste it on the hopeless?”
“I’ve already learned Parseltongue. What else is there?”
“Elvish.”
“You’re like, a gen-u-wine nerd. Love it. Meet me at the picnic tables during lunch. Bring your brain, and
something for it to do,” he said as he walked away. “Oh, your flap’s open, by the way,” he called over his
shoulder.
“Excuse me?”
Jamie pointed at my messenger bag with a grin, then strolled to his next class. I closed my bag."

This week I'm reading:

Instant Gratification - Jill Shalvis

“I have to clean the wounds,” she repeated.  “All of them.”
Oh, Christ. Dr. Barbie? Try Dr. Evil. She wasn’t backing down, and rather than suffer the indignity of letting her—or even worse, TJ—take down his shorts, he did it himself, and then lay there buck ass naked with his eyes closed. “I feel so cheap,” he muttered. “You didn’t even buy me dinner first.”

“Well I thought maybe it was the only way to get you to go out with me.” When she narrowed her eyes, he offered a smile.
She didn’t return it. “Is there really a baby or not?”
“There’s really a baby. Well, not yet, but soon.”
“On the trail,” she clarified. “Where there are bears and dirt and bugs and oh, I don’t know, a thousand different germs and bugs, not to mention things that could go wrong?”
“Yeah.”
“Shit."
