Review - Obsidian (Lux 01) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Title and Author: Obsidian (Lux 01) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publisher:  Entangled Teen
Publication Date: January 1st, 2011
Paperback/Hardcover: 299
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal

Summary:
Starting over sucks.
When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.
Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.
The hot alien living next door marks me.
You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.
If I don't kill him first, that is.

Review:
I’ve read this book a while ago but only now did I decide to write a review for it. Aliens are not normally my thing but I really did enjoy Obsidian and the prequel Shadows. These sexy aliens and their amazing powers really did keep me entertained.
Katy and her mother move to a new town after Katy’s father has died. Katy keeps to herself and spends most of her time reading and posting on her blog.
When Katy meets her next door neighbor her whole life changes, though. He’s a jerk to her right from the start and tries his best to keep her away from Dee, his sister who immediately befriends Katy.
Dee doesn’t back down and keeps Katy as a close friend. Katy quickly finds herself in the middle of an out-of-this-world battle as she finds out more and more about the people who live in the house next to hers.
Katy is a great main character and narrator. First of all, she’s a fellow book blogger. How cool is that? What I really like about her, though, is the fact she’s quite fiery and determined. She’s not intimidated by Daemon and never turns her back on a good battle of wits with him. Katy has a great sense of humor, she’s strong and intelligent, which makes it easy to like her and want things to work out for her.
Now, Daemon… Well, Daemon can certainly be a jerk when he wants to. He’s the bad boy next door who both fascinates and frustrates Katy or Kitty, as he likes to call her. Daemon is a flirt; he’s infuriating and often stubborn. He’s gorgeous and sexy and he knows so he’s definitely cocky but he’s also witty and it’s obvious he really does care for his family and would do anything to keep them safe.  He tries to keep Katy away by being a jerk to her but, being the persistent girl she is, he’s not always successful. That doesn’t mean Katy doesn’t want to hit him more than once as the story develops because she surely does!
I really enjoyed the relationship between Katy and Daemon. It’s one of those love-hate relationships. They seem to hate each other so much, it’s obvious they don’t. In fact, they are extremely attracted to each other and that attraction is almost tangible. The romance between them is very well-built.
Dee is Daemon’s sister and I found her to be a very interesting character as well. She’s fun and sweet and one of the few people who are able to handle Daemon.
The plot of Obsidian developed nicely and so did the relationship between the characters. There are evil aliens, strange government groups, secrets and Daemon and Katy getting to know each other while he tries to keep everyone safe, including Katy who seems to find herself involved in some kind of dangerous situation more than once.
When it comes to the world and creatures created in this book, I think Jennifer Armentrout did a wonderful job. The story behind the existence of these aliens called Luxen and Arum is believable and intriguing.
All in all, I really did enjoy Obsidian and think this is a very interesting, intriguing and well-written story. The characters are well-developed and the relationships between them complicated and able to keep the readers absorbed in what’s happening. Katy and her relationship with Daemon is definitely one of the best things in this book.
There’s a little bit of everything in this book. There’s romance, banter, mystery, action, adventure and, of course, sexy paranormal creatures.
If you are a Young Adult, Paranormal fan I think you’ll definitely be able to enjoy this book.

  2. I've heard a lot of good things about this book. It's on my list to read. I'm not usually an alien type of girl so I hope I like it! Fingers crossed...

  3. Anyone who hasn't read this book... GO DO IT NOW!!!! THis book is soooo good. I know a lot of people have been saying that dince the beginning of the year, but seriously. It really is. I totally agree about Katy - she's a strong-willed character. And apparently, in Onyx (no, I was not one of the lucky ones to get an ARC), Katy grows and develops into an even better character! That's awesome. And who can forget Daemon... well yeah. lol. Thanks for the review!!!!
