Review - Hush Hush by Becca FitzPatrick

Title and Author: Hush Hush by Becca FitzPatrick
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Publication Date: October 13th, 2009
Paperback/Hardcover: 391
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal

Summary:
For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her...until Patch comes along.
With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment, but after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is far more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.

Review:
I read this book when it came out but never got around to reviewing it. That doesn’t mean I didn’t like it. I actually enjoyed it very much!
First of all, the cover of Hush Hush immediately drew my attention. Isn’t the cover just great? The book itself didn’t disappoint me. It is a romantic thriller able to keep mystery, suspense, romance and young adult fans entertained.
Hush Hush is the story of Nora and her new crush, Patch, who turns out to be a fallen angel (and a very sexy one at that). Nora can’t help but be attracted to Patch but she quickly realizes he might mean trouble. Adventure and danger start to follow Nora everywhere and she soon has to decide if she can indeed trust Patch while fighting for her life.
I really liked the characters in this book. Nora might not be my favorite female character ever but she had her good moments. I enjoyed the fact she wasn’t sorely focused on Patch. Sometimes female characters can’t seem to stop drooling over the potential love interest. Nora wasn’t like that. Patch was important to her but she also had a lot to deal with and I think she reacted well considering everything.
Now, Patch. Oh, Patch! Patch is definitely a bad boy. He’s arrogant and sometimes a little but obnoxious. I loved his constant innuendos and banter. Underneath the bad boy image Patch can be sweet and protective, though. By the end of the book it becomes clear he really does like Nora. Patch has quickly become one of my favorite YA guys out there.
I really liked the banter and dialogue between Nora and Patch. It was entertaining and I think their relationship developed nicely.
All the secondary characters like Vee and Nora’s mom were also interesting and brought something to the story.
Overall I really enjoyed Hush Hush. It was well-written and well-paced. I liked the mystery and suspense in the story.
If you like a little mystery mixed with paranormal romance, you should definitely read this book.

Rating: Somewhere between Worth Your Time and Must Read (4 ½ Stars)

  2. One of my students told me that there were pretty racy sex scenes in it. Do you think it is appropriate for Younger high school students (14-16 years old)?

  3. @Anne Bennett
Well, there is a lot of sexual tension between Nora and Patch so maybe the book is not exactly appropriate for young teens but I think older teens will be able to appreaciate the book.

  5. I completely agree with your review! Patch is instantly likable and the tension between him and Nora makes you keep turning the pages to see what's going to happen! Aside from all the mystery, that also grips you by the throat, of course ;P Great review! And I found Crescendo even better than Hush Hush! Can't wait to hear your thoughts about it!

  8. Great review! I love Hush Hush series. Nora and Patch are very interesting characters and you have to read and the last page of book to understand exactly what happen. I like that. I can't wait for Silence.
